At the center of every tooth is the pulp. Pulp is a collection of blood vessels and nerves that help build and maintain the surrounding tooth structure. A root canal is necessary when the pulp of the tooth becomes infected or inflamed. Infection or inflammation of the pulp can be caused by trauma to the tooth, deep decay, cracks and chips, or various other reasons. This injured or diseased pulp is removed and the root canal system and is thoroughly cleaned and sealed.
